What Does the Bible Have to Say About the Dead?
THE DEAD HAS NO MEMORY
Psalm 6: 5
For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?
Ecclesiastes 9: 5, 6
5) For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward: for the memory of them is forgotten.
6) Also their love and their hatred and their envy is now perished, neither have they any more a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun.
Ecclesiastes 9: 5-6 (NIV)
5) For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten.
6) Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun.
These verses cleary show that those who are dead have no memory of God and no memory of anything else.
THE DEAD CANNOT PRAISE GOD
Psalm 115: 17
The dead praise not the Lord neither any that go down into silence.
Psalm 89: 10 - 12
10) Wilt thou show wonders to the dead? Shall the dead arise and praise thee?
11) Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction?
12) Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
Psalm 30: 9
What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit (grave)? Shall the DUST praise thee? Shall it declare thy truth?
Isaiah 38: 18 (NIV)
18]For the grave cannot praise you, death cannot sing your praise; those who go down to the pit cannot hope for your faithfulness.
These verses show that when we die we return to dust and dust cannot praise God.
WE ARE NOTHING BUT DUST
God speaking to Adam after he had sinned
Genesis 3: 19
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it was thou taken: for DUST thou art and to DUST shalt thou return.
Genesis 2: 7
Amd the Lord God formed man of the DUST of the ground....
WHERE ARE THE DEAD?
Peter's sermon regarding David's Location
Acts 2: 29, 34
29) Men and brethren, let me freely speak to you of the patriach David, that he is both DEAD and BURIED, and his sepulcher (grave) is with us unto this day.
34) For David is not ascended into the heavens...
John 3: 13 (Jesus is speaking)
And no man hath ascended up to heaven but He that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
DAVID IS STILL DEAD AND BURIED, AWAITING THE MOMENT, LIKE ALL OF THE FAITHFUL DEAD, WHEN CHRIST RETURNS FOR HIS CHURCH.
1st Thessalonians 4: 15 - 17
15) For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep (dead).
16) For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God, and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17) Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
WHERE ARE THE DEAD AND WHAT ARE THEY DOING?
The dead in Christ are asleep in their graves awaiting the sound of the trump of God that will awaken them from their sleep and call them to meet the Lord in the air. They will reign with Christ for one thousand (1000) years. This period is known as the millennial reign of Christ.
The rest of the dead are also asleep in their graves, awaiting the time when they will be raised from their graves (after the millennial reign of Christ) to be brought before the Great White Throne Judgement, where they will receive their reward - they will be cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20)
(Unless otherwise indicated, all scripture quotations are from the King James Version of the Bible)
Do you know where you will spend eternity?
Hebrews 9: 27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die and after this the judgment.
