Learning to Understand God

1st John 4:7-8
7) Beloved let us love one another for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God.
8) He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Love for God is manifested in our lives through love for others. If you do not have love for others you do not have a relationship with God because God is love.

Manifested

When something is manifested it is revealed or made known.

The Children of God vs. The Children of the devil

1st John 3:10
In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

Righteousness

Righteousness is doing what is right according to God as outlined by Him in His word.

Brother

Brother refers not only to our spiritual brothers and sisters but also includes the people we come into contact with every day – our fellow man.

How God Manifested His Love For Us

1st John 4:9
In this was manifested the love of God toward us because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world that we might live through Him.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Love is always expressed by a positive action.

True Love

1st John 4:10
Herein is love, not that we loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation (sacrifice or payment) for our sins.

Our Response to God’s Love

1st John 4:11
Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

God expressed His love by offering His Son as the sacrifice for our sins.

How are we to love one another?

In Matthew 19:19b Jesus tells us that we are to love our neighbours (brothers) as we love ourselves.

Observation

Love in word alone is not love at all. It must be expressed by some form of tangible and positive action in order for it to be fully understood and appreciated.

A Prayer to Receive Salvation

Dear God, I confess that I am a sinner. I believe that Your Son Jesus Christ died for my sins. I ask Your forgiveness of my sins and accept Your Son into my life as my personal Lord and Saviour. I believe that You raised Him from the dead and because of this, I know that I can live a victorious new life in Christ. Thank You for my salvation.

Now complete the process of salvation by being baptized.

Acts 2:38
...
Repent and be baptized … in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins….
